Thermal and Strain Characteristics of EGR Cooler

2014
The EGR Cooler for diesel engine is a shell & tube type heat exchanger, which the coolant passes through the shell to cool down the exhaust- gas inside tubes. To improve the performance of EGR Cooler, maximizing heat transfer coefficient, heat transfer area and corrosion resistant material should be considered. And the thermal stress produced by the temperature difference between exhaust gas and coolant is very important factor from the point of safety operation. This paper reports the thermal and stress analysis of EGR Cooler. The thermo-flow characteristics inside the EGR Cooler and surface temperature have been investigated also by using CFD code STAR-CCM+ 8.0. Finally, as a result of the simulation, the location of crack of the header was presented, which shows the location of maximum plastic deformation.
