Potential of naso-brain drug delivery in glioblastoma therapy

2021
Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM) is considered a severe tumor compared to other existing ones. The recommended approaches used for the treatment of GBM are invasive and suffering from their limitations. In addition to this, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is considered as one of the major hurdles in the successful treatment of GBM. Therefore, various drug delivery systems and different available routes of administration were explored by the scientific community over the period of time. To surmount the issues of conventional and nanocarrier-based methods, recently, the novel approach of nasal drug delivery system has gained the attention for the treatment of GBM. Hence, this chapter covers the glimpse of GBM, its current treatment options, and the inputs of recently emerged nanocarrier systems. It mainly focuses on nanoparticles, vesicular systems, emulsion-based systems, and also the Ayurveda-based nasya therapies for the effective management and treatment of GBM. It also describes the future trends and Ayurveda-based alternative medicines for GBM.
