Otorhinolaryngologic manifestations observed during the coure of AIDS. 65 cases

1995
During September 1991 to February 1994 in Mali there were 65 AIDS patients aged 3-62 with ear nose and throat (ENT) conditions in the ENT Service and the Internal Medicine Service of Gabriel Toure Hospital in Bamako. The total number of ENT manifestations was 116. 34 patients were male and 31 female. 57% of the AIDS patients suffered from oropharyngeal candidiasis. This represented 31.9% of all ENT manifestations. Other important ENT manifestations were otitis media (29% of all AIDS patients and 17.2% of all ENT manifestations) various forms of inflammation of the nose (20% and 11.2% respectively) and atrophic pharyngitis (18.5% and 10.3% respectively). 5% of AIDS patients (2.6% of all ENT manifestations) had Kaposis sarcoma on the palate. Otorhinolaryngologists should be aware of such ENT manifestations since they are often manifestations of infectious risks in the course of HIV infection. These manifestations have no influence on the course of HIV disease however.
