Medical Student Transfers

To the Editor.— I read with keen interest the timely and poignant article by Charles C. Edwards, MD (239:2463, 1978). I completely agree with him that various agencies of the federal government have confiscated the decision-making process for medical education, and that this is due, in part, to relatively weak professional leadership. I would like to share with the readers ofThe Journala personal experience that emphasized this unfortunate development. Last year, I began working at the University of Michigan and hoped that my wife, who was a sophomore medical student in an out-of-state medical school, would transfer to this fine institution at that time. After some rather lengthy and vigorous attempts at this transfer, we were informed by the dean's office here that under no circumstances would this medical school accept transfers into the junior year.
