Sagittal section imaging anatomy of human hip joint

2003
Five right hips of male adults cadavers were used. After the MR imaging examination, all specimens were frozen and cut into 6 sagittal sections. The morphological characteristics, the location relationship, the variation of the articular surface, capsule, cavity, ligaments, synovial plicae and sciatic nerve were all observed, and compared with the corresponding MR images. The prominent features of their structure were as follows: The sagittal and vertical length of the femoral head were 47.3 mm and 45.9 mm respectively, whereas the thickest articular cartilage of the top head of femur was 2.9 mm. The sagittal length of acetabulum was 49.1 mm and the width of the ligament of femoral head was 4.5 mm. The thickness of the transverse acetabular ligament was 2.3 mm, and the thickest part of sciatic nerve was 2.9 mm. The variation of morphology and structure of all sagittal section specimens of hip joint provides foundation for medical imaging diagnosis.
