Use of Alcohol Impregnated Caps to Reduce Catheter Related Bloodstream Infections

2013
21 months After Alcohol Impregnated Cap 9 10 19 following the implementation of the VAP prevention measures over the three month period. In the seven month pre-intervention period rates of VAP ranged from 0.00 to 38.2 and dropped after implementing the intervention to 1.2 for the following 17 months. Cuff pressures before intervention were found to be 10-15 cmH20 and were consistently kept at 20-30 cmH20 during intervention period LESSON LEARNED: A multidisciplinary intervention focusing on measures to prevent VAP during transportation reduced VAP rates in our neuroscience ICU. Future studies should examine the contribution of each aspect of the intervention to the outcome as well as the cost-effectiveness of these.
