Reactions of α- and β-pinenes with some nitrating agents

Reactions of α- and β-pinenes with nitrogen dioxide give rise to a mixture of nitro compounds with retention of bicyclo[3.1.1]heptane structure. Therewith the composition and products ratio depend on the solvent characterand to a certain degree on zeolite presence. The reaction of 70% nitric acid both with α-and β-pinene results in nitrate of α-terpineol.
