The invention discloses a self-insulation building block and a preparation method thereof. The self-insulation building block comprises nickel slag powder, coal ash, phosphorous slag powder, a functional additive, slaked lime, cement, sand, ceramsite, expanded polystyrene particles and water, wherein the functional additive comprises aluminum sulfate, sodium metasilicate and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose. The preparation method of the self-insulation building block comprises the following steps: putting the nickel slag powder, phosphorous slag powder, coal ash, cement, slaked lime, sand, ceramsite and expanded polystyrene particles into a blender mixer; evenly mixing, adding water and pulping; adding the functional additive to stir; and loading a mold, vibrating and molding by pressure. The self-insulation building block has the advantages that the preparation method is simple, industrial residues are greatly utilized, the production cost is significantly reduced, waste is changed into treasures, and the self-insulation building block has relatively high practical value, and considerable market prospect.
