A LIST OF TREES, SHRUBS AND WOODY CLIMBERS INDIGENOUS OR NATURALISED IN RHODESIA

2016
This is a complete list of all woody species of flowering plants and ferns, 2 m or more in height and occurring wild or naturalised in Rhodesia. The criterion used to decide whether a plant should be included or excluded is the same as that used by F. White in his Forest Flora of Northern Rhodesia (1962) but it has been more rigidly applied. In this list only those species which are sometimes at least 2 m in height during their dormant period have been in cluded; thus species which normally behave only as suffrutices and die down more or less to ground level in the dry season are excluded. Border-line species have been for the most part included, as for example Vigna frutescens which behaves over most of its range as a trailing or shortly climbing perennial, but in some fire-protected parts of the Matopos occurs as a liane. Tinospora caffra often dies right back to ground level but is sometimes a woody climber. Many species, such as Abutilon angulatum, are often regarded as shrubs in the growing season, but since they die down in the dry season they have been excluded.
