Lower Esophageal Sphincter Characteristics After a Simplified Anti-Reflux Procedure
1988
There are many operations currently available for the correction of resistant gastroesophageal reflux. The most widely practiced procedure is the Nissen fundopli-cation, which is of proven efficacy, but this is often compromised by mechanical complications such as persistent dysphagia and gas bloat, which appear to relate to the production of a super-competent lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which relaxes imperfectly on swallowing. Other complications such as slippage and disruption occasionally necessitate reoperation.
