COMMENTS ON THE PERMANENT CROSSING OF THE MESSINA STRAIT
1985
The three options for a permanent crossing of the Messina Straits to link Reggio and Messina are examined: a bridge; a submarine tunnel; or a tunnel under the sea bed. Statistical details of population and traffic between the two towns are presented. It is concluded that the submarine tunnel seems preferable for the following reasons: better facility for the reciprocal movement of the inhabitants of Reggio and Messina; the certain possibility of cable anchorage to the sea bed or other solution similar to those adopted on North Sea oil platforms; greater immunity to seismic activity than the other two options; freedom from surface currents and wind effects; and a lower cost than the other two solutions.
