A Frequency and Polarization Reconfigurable Spiral Antenna based on Liquid Metal

2021
In this communication, we propose a frequency and polarization reconfigurable spiral antenna tuned by liquid metal. The antenna has a compact size and wide reconfigurable bandwidth. The dual-layer polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microfluidic attached to the dielectric substrate ensures liquid metal flowing. The left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) are achieved by adjusting the distribution of liquid metal in microfluidic channels. Changing the lengths of liquid metal arms realizes frequency reconfiguration. The proposed antenna supports continuously reconfigurable operating frequencies of RHCP from 0.6GHz to 13.5GHz and keeps working from 1.5GHz to 2.5GHz of LHCP.
