Arthur Courtenay Saunders (“Sandy”) was born in Liverpool. In 1941 he won a scholarship to Liverpool University, where he started a BSc in electrical engineering, but in 1943 he volunteered and became a radar officer with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). After Arnhem and the crossing of the Rhine, he decided that what he was doing was rather boring and so volunteered to become a glider pilot.
