Airborne measurements of ice particles in contrails and cirrus clouds with the DLR research aircraftFalcon and HALO

An overview of particles measurements in contrail and cirrus clouds during CONCERT, ML-Cirrus and ACCESS-II with the research aircraft Falcon and HALO is given. Particle measurements systems inside the wing probe canisters are introduced, measuring the size distribution, shape, surface roughness and distribution of cloud particles. Different flight strategies for measurements in young and aged contrails as well as mid-latitude cirrus clouds are presented.
