Vulnerability of aquaculture in the tropical Pacific to climate change
2011
[Extract] In this chapter, we assess the vulnerability of aquaculture in the tropical Pacific to climate change. We begin by summarising recent and potential aquaculture
production to set the scene for the sector, and then use the framework outlined in Chapter 1, based on exposure, sensitivity, potential impact and adaptive capacity, to
evaluate the vulnerability of the main commodities for food security and livelihoods listed in Table 11.2. We also look at the risks posed by climate change to increased
incidence of diseases. We then integrate all projected effects of climate change to assess the vulnerability of the sector as a whole. We conclude by examining the
remaining uncertainty and the research needed to fill the gaps, and by identifying the management measures required to capitalise on the opportunities, and to minimise
the adverse effects, expected to result from climate change.
