Djup eller Bred - Dynamiken mellan ekonomisk tillväxt och teknologi

2017
Economic growth research has over the past few decades tried to explain what causes coun-tries to achieve a sustainable economic growth. Many theories and hypotheses’ have been introduced and tried empirically. One key factor that has proven to create growth is the tech-nological progress. But what is technology? It is a very complex concept and in this paper we use panel data for 41 countries over a time period of 50 years to try and nuance this idea. Our main hypothesis is that a country’s technological level differs between industries and is de-pendent on how much the specific sector produces to the national GDP. To test this we creat-ed a scale that reaches from deep to broad technology, where a country positioned on the deep side is dependent on one or a few sectors while the opposite side is dependent on many and have a much more diversified economy. Depending on where the country is positioned on this scale will affect the GDP growth. The main result is that the deeper a country is positioned on the scale will have a negative effect on the growth in the long span. Although in the short span, it has a positive effect. (Less)
