Technological and tribological aspects of milling-burnishing process of complex surfaces

2020
Abstract In this paper an evaluation of sequential ball end milling-burnishing process of a curvilinear surfaces has been presented by considering some technological and tribological aspects. During this study, a measurements of surface integrity indicators, as: surface topography, hardness and residual stresses were conducted on a machined sample. In addition, a ball-on-disc friction and wear tests of a machined samples were carried out. The effects of milling-burnishing process were compared with ones obtained after milling and polishing. The analysis of results involved the parametric, non-parametric and fractal analysis of surface topographies. It was found that application of burnishing process is more advantageous than polishing in terms of surface finish (almost 9-fold reduction of Sz parameter), as well as the tribological characteristics (almost two-fold reduction of volumetric wear rate).
