Kinetic rates in the oxygen–iodine system

1982
Rate constants governing the following processes were determined at 298 K from optical emission data collected using a flow‐tube apparatus: O2(1Δ)+O2(1Δ)→k1O2(1Σ)+O2(3Σ), O2(1Δ)+I*k7→O2(1Σ)+I, I+O2(1Δ)k4→I+O2(3Σ), I*+O2(3Σ)k9 →I+O2(3Σ). Results, in units of cm3 molecule−1 s−1, are: k1=2.0×10−17, k7=8×10−14, and k4+Keqk9=3×10−14, where Keq is the equilibrium constant for the process I+O2(1Δ)⇄I*+O2(3Σ). The quenching probabilities for O2(1Σ) on glass and halocarbon wax were found to be about 2×10−2 and 1×10−3, respectively. The quenching probability for O2(1Δ) on halocarbon wax was found to be about 3×10−5.
