Accident Hotspot Analysis Using GIS

2020
Globalization caused an impact in many developing countries across the world. India is a no exception. This change shaped scope for development of travel and transportation system, which in turn increased the traffic congestion and traffic density. It has lead to increase in cause of accidents over the last decade. Traffic safety is very important element and plays an crucial role in the development of sustainable transportation system. A GIS based spatial study can provide a complete solution on accidents for governing and management of accident events as a real-time monitoring system. This paper covers a GIS based approach to road accident governing system based on spatial and temporal analysis. The general features of the accident have been taken into consideration like the place of occurrence, type of accident, section of law and time of occurrence. A comparative analysis is done between and the accident data of the year 2016 and 2017 and the change in trend of accidents is drawn out. In this study, various GIS techniques have been implemented to identify and predict the accident prone spots within Visakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh. QGIS is used to analyse the accident data and locate the hotspots in the city.
