The association between myopia, personality and mental ability in a sample of young adults

2014
There is some evidence which supports the idea that people who suffer a refractive error exhibit disctinctive personality traits. These studies found myopes were more introspective than emmetropic or hyperopic. Additionally, some studies show that myopics score higher on measures of IQ and educational attainment. The present research aims to study the relationship between myopia, mental hability and personality in a student sample. Undergraduates from two different universities completed the Zuckerman–Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ; Zuckerman et al., 1993) and factors V and R from the PMA (Thurstone and Thurstone, 1989). Refractive error was measured by Seiko 5001©, being the criteria for myopia −1.00 in the best eye. The objective of this study consists in determining whether personality factors or/and mental ability (FV/FR) will predict myopia independently of the potentially confounding variables of sex, and age. Results will show us if our results will be consistent or not with the literature.
