Braquiterapia de alta tasa de dosis en pacientes con cáncer de próstata Prostate Cancer Treatment with High Dose Brachytherapy

2008
Objective: To present results on local control, and clinical,or biochemical disease free survival, rates among prostate cancer patients treated with high dose brachytherapy at the National Cancer Institute of Colombia. Methods: Between January 1996 and December 2004, 64 prostate cancer patients were treated with interstitial brachytherapy as exclusive treatment or as reinforcement for external radiotherapy. Events included biochemical or local relapse, and disease progressions. A descriptive analyses was done and survival rates were compared with the Kaplan Meier method. Results: Sixteen events occurred among patients analyzed, 12 (75%) among high risk patients, 2 (12.5%) among intermediate risk patients, and 2 (12.5%) among low risk patients. Toxicity could not be evaluated due to lack of systematic reporting. For all risk groups the accumulated disease free probability was 60.7%. The relative risk of high risk groups over low risk groups is 1.45. Conclusions: Due to the small sample number the study is unable to establish accurate differences among risk groups. Institutional protocols for treatment and follow-up are recommended.
