Anterior decompression and interbody fusion with plate fixation for cervical spondylosis myelopathy

2000
objective:To analyze the clinical and radiological outcomes of anterior decompression and interbody fusion with an additional plate fixation for cervical spondylosis myelopathy.Method:One hundred and three patients with cervical spondylosis myelopathy treated by cervical anterior decompression, interbody fusion, and plating were analysed retrospectively. The outcomes was assessed by clinical criteria and radiographs of the cervical spine.Result:Ninetynine patients were followed up for twelve months in average. The rate of excellent and good results was 80%. The overall fusion rate was 979%.A solid fusion was obtained in all cases with a singlelevel fusion and in 977 % of the cases with a multilevel fusion. Conclusion:This study demonstrated that plate fixation can reduce the rate of nonunion and increase the rate of fusion in patients undergoing interbody fusion for cervical spondolysis. The clinical results appear promising. Author′s address Department of Orthopedics,Changzheng Hospital,Second Military Medical University,Shanghai,200003
