Study of Therapeatic Effects of Maltol on Focal Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Damages in Rats

2001
Objective To investigate the protective effects of maltol (MT)on focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion damages in hippocampal structure in rats. Methods An ischemia model of wistar rats was established by clipping bilateralcervical arteries for 30 minutes, and then reperfusion was made through removing the clippings.Rats were randomly divided into three groups:①Sham operated control group(SOC),which is surgically exposed bilateralcervical arteries only.②Ischemia-reperfusion group(IR).③MT treated group,700μmol/L maltol(MT) normal saline was administered through intravenous injection before clipping and reperfusion. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and ATPase activity were detected 1 hour after reperfusion for all 3 groups. Results MDA content rose obviously (P0.01) andSOD,ATPase activity reduced obviously(P0.01) in IR group.MT can diminish MDA content(P0.01) and inprove ATPase activity (P0.01),but can't improre SOD activity. Conclusion MT can clear oxygenic radical, reduce the reaction of lipid-peroxidation and improre ATPase activity. So MT can decrease damage in the IR injury of hippocampal structure.
