Security Enhancement of Contactless Tachometer-Based Cyber Physical System
2021
Brushless DC (BLDC) motor truly replaces many brushed DC motors due to its features like high stability, larger torque, less power consumption, and simple control mechanism. Speed and direction of BLDC motor can be controlled by Hall Effect sensor from any remote location using Internet. This Internet of Things (IoT)-based remote control of BLDC motor can be susceptible to many security attacks. These attacks may result in loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of BLDC motor CPS. Hence, it is essential to protect the CPS of BLDC against all these attacks. Initially, this chapter focuses on available BLDC motor speed control systems. Then it demonstrates the CPS of contactless tachometer-based BLDC motor control. To operate this system from remote location, this research has created a webpage. By using this webpage, the user can remotely insert the speed of BLDC motor. Also, the user can know the present speed of BLDC motor by using this webpage. This research discusses possible security threats to this system. To protect the unwanted attacks on this system, the security measures are implemented using lightweight cryptographic algorithms and Splunk Enterprise tool. The security measures are prepared by considering the lightweight nature of the system and cost-effective feature. This method of securing CPS using Splunk alert feature and HTTP Event Collector configuration is novel. The Splunk senses the real time machine data generated by CPS. This data is analyzed to protect the system against undesired Cyber Attacks. Finally, this chapter provides a cost-effective solution of a secure Cyber Physical System of Hall Effect sensor-based BLDC motor. Comparative analysis of many similar existing systems is described in detail. It is concluded that the proposed system is inexpensive, secure, fast and lightweight as compared to existing one.
