Cutaneous papillomas as indicators of the presence of colon polyps in patients with acromegaly

2012
We present the case of patient suffered of acromegaly, with skin tags disseminated on the neck and axillae and colonoscopically detected multiple colonic polyps. Acromegaly is a chronic endocrinopathy, predominantly caused by growth hormone secreting pituitary adenoma (somatotropinoma). The association between acromegaly and neoplasias is still metter of debate despite numerous in vitro and in vivo evidences. But, the malignancies are the third leading cause of mortality in acromegalics. Among them, the most frequently detected are colonic neoplasias. Some clinical signs (such as skin tags) can pointed out clinician onto advantage of IGF1 proliferative activity (for example, in colonic mucosa). Regarding to that, clinician responsibility is to perform determined diagnostic procedures to detect neoplasia.
