The physicochemical properties of the surface of CeO2-ZrO2 and M2O3-CeO2-ZrO2 (M = Y and La) solid solutions

2003
The influence of redox treatment on the properties of the surface of CeO 2 -ZrO 2 and M 2 O 3 -CeO 2 -ZrO 2 (M =Y and La) solid solutions was studied by IR spectroscopy. Various carbonate-carboxylate structures were found to occur on the surface of all samples. Their stability on 10YO 1 . 5 -30CeO 2 -ZrO 2 and 10LaO 1 . 5 -30CeO 2 -ZrO 2 was so high that a redox treatment cycle was incapable of removing them. Reducing treatment of samples caused reversible reduction of carbonate structures to carbon monoxide, which was occluded in pores. The hydroxyl coating of YO 1 . 5 -CeO 2 -ZrO 2 was studied by IR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.
