CONSTRUCTION OF THICK BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT LAYERS

1971
THIS REPORT BRIEFLY DESCRIBES THE STATE OF THE ART OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF HOT-COATED BITUMINOUS LAYERS. EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS WERE CONDUCTED INTO THE LAYING AND COMPACTION OF THICK BITUMINOUS LAYERS. A CONSTRUCTION METHOD IS PROPOSED FOR BITUMINOUS LAYERS CONSISTING OF A HOT-COATED GRAVEL-BITUMEN MIXTURE OR CHIPPINGS-BITUMEN MIXTURE, WHICH HAVE A MAXIMUM THICKNESS OF 15CM WHEN COMPACTED. THIS NEW METHOD ENSURES HIGHER QUALITY AND STABILITY FOR BITUMINOUS LAYERS AND ENSURES THAT LARGE MODERN MIXING PLANTS AND COMPACTION MACHINERY REACH THEIR MAXIMUM OUTPUT. FURTHERMORE THIS TECHNIQUE RESULTS IN LOWER CONSTRUCTION COSTS AND LONGER WORKING SEASON.
