Iron Deficiency in Heart Failure with Relatively Preserved Left Ventricular Function is Associated with More Adverse Co-morbidities

2013
Background: Iron plays a key role inmusclemetabolism and cardiac function with iron deficiency (ID) affecting clinical status in chronic heart failure (CHF), independent of anaemia. We evaluated the impact of ID on left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and how these factors affect clinical status in CHF patients. Methods:Laboratory andclinical parameters of patients attending a quaternary referral CHF clinic were analysed. Patients were stratified according to ID status, then further subdivided according to LVEF ( 35% and ID, havemore co-morbidities and reduced utilisation of prognostically important medications. This highlights two sub-groups with poorer treatment response and whomay benefit from more aggressive intervention.
