Studies on Unsteady Characteristics of Free Surface Flow in ADS Windowless Target

One of the most important issues in RD research of windowless target in accelerator driven subcritical system(ADS) is the study of formation and control method of coolant free surface. In this study,experimental and numerical investigations on unsteady characteristics of free surface are conducted in a scaled windowless target using water as test fluid.Laser induced fluorescence technique was applied for visualization of flow field.Under high Re conditions,an unsteady vortex is observed.By the fluctuation of free surface,vortex structure shows some typical configurations. Numerical simulation is performed using LES turbulence model and VOF method.The numerical results show that VOF method with LES model can qualitatively reproduce the characteristics of flow field and free surface in the windowless target.
