Nuclear Scintigraphy - A Diagnostic modality for Hepatic Obstruction in a Dog

2012
The dog having history of anorexia, vomition, fever, icteric mucous membranes and delayed blood clotting was reported. The hemato-biochemical profile showed PCV 45.2%, TEC 6.52/cumm, TLC 25.2/cumm and Platelets 1,11,000/cumm. SGPT 351 IU/L, SGOT 108 IU/L, Direct Bilirubin 9.1 mg/dl, Indirect Bilirubin 4.2 mg/dl, Direct Bilirubin: Indirect Bilirubin ratio 2.17, Creatinine 1.8 mg/dl, BUN 28.8 mg/dl. Scintigraphy with 99mTc-Mebrofenin revealed 1.86% clearance/hour suggestive of unsatisfactory hepatobiliary clearance due to intra-hepatobiliary obstruction. Interventional approach with Phenobarbitone @ 0.5mg/kg body weight for microsomal enzyme activation and dietary stimulation was incorporated (fatty diet) to facilitate biliary clearance.
