Reversible Lane Operation for Arterial Roadways – the Washington, DC Experience
2007
The operations of reversible lanes for arterial roadway in the District of Columbia are discussed in this paper. The operations of reversible lanes are evaluated using three different criteria: (1) utilization of existing infrastructure capacity; (2) safety; and (3) land use/economic development impacts. The discussion presented in this paper takes into account constraints inherent in a built-out urban environment and operational constraints imposed by external stakeholders. The paper also discusses the status of continued operations of such facilities and draws some preliminary conclusions.
