An attempt to analysis of the Southern and the Middle chambers of Leigutai Cave Longmen Grottoes

By a careful iconographic investigation on-site,this article identification the fact that the presentations in the southern and the middle chamber of Leitai Cave are representation of ceremonial rule for confession and receive ordination of Avatamsaka,textual proof mainly based on Buddhāvatamsaka-mahāvaipulya-sūtra and Brahmajāl-sūtra.The motif of the southern chamber was a law Buddha-realm of Buddhāvatamsaka-mahāvaipulya-sūtra and Brahmajāl-sūtra,the school had worshipped Vairochana as chief image of Buddha which were just found to be presented in southern chamber,there are certain signs convinced the fact that once the site had perform Buddhist ceremonies that ceremonial rules and commandments conveying beings to salvation'a good appearance cultivation'and to serving the Buddha with offering of good signs.The contents of the middle chamber nearby has much closer relationship with the Mahayana commandments or prohibitions for Bodhisattvas and monks,in which the chief image of Buddha was Maitreya,who was believed to be announced to be empress WU Zetian's emanation body,and the image of a patriarch,which was embodied idea of traditional dhyana.The constructive designer of the two chambers was Fa Zang(643-712),the third patriarch of the Hua-yen school,empress WU Zetian's revered and trust Buddhist master who believes in and submits himself to Amitabha at the same time too.
