An improved design for a sealed silica crystal growth ampoule

Abstract A new type of sealed silica ampoule is described which facilitates the growth of single crystals from the gas phase. The important feature of this novel design is a vacuum jacket which surrounds the growth chamber and so reduces the radial temperature gradient and cooling due to convection in the furnace tube. The growth of ZnO, ZnWO 4 , ZnS, CdCr 2 S 4 , HgCr 2 Se 4 , GaP and ZnTe is described to illustrate the applicability of the new ampoule.
