High-Speed and Wideband Transmission Using Dispersion-Compensating/Managing Photonic Crystal Fiber and Dispersion-Shifted Fiber
2007
This paper describes the applicability of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) as a dispersion-compensating/managing medium for conventional dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF). We experimentally confirm the dispersion compensation performance of the PCF in the 1310-nm wavelength region. A 40-Gb/s transmission over a 7.6-km-long DSF is demonstrated using the dispersion-compensating PCF. We also propose a dispersion-managed transmission line that is composed of a PCF and a DSF as a high-speed and wideband transport. We show that the proposed transmission line quadruples the available bandwidth for a 40-Gb/s transmission compared with that of a DSF transmission line. A 40-Gb/s dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing transmission over a 46-km-long PCF-DSF transmission line is demonstrated by simultaneously using the 1310- and 1550-nm wavelength regions. Moreover, we numerically investigate the applicability of PCF with a uniform air-hole structure as a dispersion-compensating/managing medium for conventional DSF.
