The Global Regulatory Framework for Medicinal Plants

2017
Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the regulations applicable to commercial medicinal plant products from a global perspective. It explores the underlying reasons for regulation, including the prevalence of medicinal plant use in developing countries, the rapidly growing demand for plant-based medicinal products in more developed countries, and the challenges posed for ensuring both patient safety and choice. The chapter also provides an overview of existing regulatory frameworks and categories, a comparison of the current regulations at a national and regional level, the major role being played by the World Health Organization, and the significant challenges which remain to achieving regional, and ultimately international, harmonization.
