Cloud detection algorithms used in the processing of ATSR data into sea surface temperature

1997
One of the major problems in remote sensing in the infrared region is the reliable detection of cloud contamination. The algorithms are constantly improved, and this paper gives the recent improvements to three of the techniques used in the processing of ATSR data. The modifications to the 1.6μm test are especially effective when the sea surface measurements are made close the point where specular renection from the sun occurs. The 11 μm spatial coherence test and the infrared histogram test have been enhanced to make them more effective in detecting uniform low level cloud.
