Effects of aqueous extract of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam on the growth of Streptococcus mutans

Objective To investigate the effects of aqueous extract of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam.on the growth of Streptococcus mutans.Methods Steam distillation was used to extract essential oil.Petroleum ether,chloroform,ethylacetate,N-butanol were extracted from the Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam.using the system solvent extraction.The formation and growth of Streptococcus mutans on biofilm Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam.were tested by determination of the OD value and crystal violet colouration.Results The Essential oil and pulegone could effectively inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans;N-butanol,Linarin and diosmin had influence on the growth of Streptococcus mutans.Conclusion The antibacterial activity of the Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam.is the common effect of a variety of ingredients.
