DESIGN OF TRANSIENT ENGINE-VEHICLE OPERATING BEHAVIOR WITH DIGITAL ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEMS

At the beginning of the eighties, work was started at BMW on developing control and regulation strategies for future engines. It soon became apparent that with the tools then available, it was neither possible to optimize existing systems nor to find new solutions. The foundations were laid for future testing, measurement and experimental methods. The tools currently available offer their users targeted tuning of the engine control systems of the coming years. The drive management system of the BMW 750i, with its twelve-cylinder engine, has now reached a high decree of sophistication. The process control implemented on engine, gearbox and vehicle demand extensive tuning work. Some of the test methods developed at BMW, and the associated testing and measuring costs, are described in the report.
