Design of heterocomplexes for supramolecular polymers and surface functionalization

2003
The development of the ureido-pyrimidinone and ureidotriazine groups which are easy to prep. and have high dimerization consts., has been a breakthrough towards supramol. polymers. Although the self-complementarity of these units is an advantage in the self-assembly of linear supramol. polymers, it imposes restrictions to the self-assembly of block copolymers since it cannot prevent macrophase sepn. in a system with incompatible blocks. Moreover, for reversible surface functionalization, the possibilities of using self-complementary units are also limited because of dimerization on the surface. Therefore, the development of new heterocomplexes with high complexation consts. is important. We have synthesized acyclic imides and studied their complexation behavior with ureas. Preorganization of the imide in a trans,trans-conformation by an intramol. hydrogen bond resulted in a significant increase in assocn. const. Furthermore, attempts have been undertaken to develop linear AADA array based on benzotriazine-N-oxides. Insights into this complementary binding will be discussed. [on SciFinder (R)]
