Evaluation of hydrogenation behaviors of MgHx–SCZY (Sr(Ce0.9Zr0.1)0.95Yb0.05O3−δ) composites by ball-milling

2013
Abstract Metal hydrides based on Mg are very promising materials for hydrogen storage applications because Mg hydride has a high hydrogen storage capacity, reversible hydriding behavior, light weight and low cost. However Mg hydride is difficult for practical uses because it requires high temperature and has a slower rate of hydrogen absorption/desorption. Therefore, various catalysts as the main factor for the adsorption of hydrogen have been actively studied. SCZY (Sr(Ce 0.9 Zr 0.1 ) 0.95 Yb 0.05 O 3− δ ), as one of the best proton conducting ceramics, has both high proton conductivity and high chemical stability. SCZY is expected to have a good influence as catalyst on the kinetics of hydrogenation behavior. In this study, we were prepared MgH x –SCZY composites using ball-milling. SCZY powder prepared by the sol–gel method was added to 5 wt.% and 10 wt.% of Mg hydride. The fabricated MgH x –SCZY composites were characterized by TG/DSC, XRD, SEM and BET. The hydrogenation behaviors were evaluated using a Sievert’s type automatic PCT apparatus.
