Wavelength division multiplexed systems using semiconductor optical amplifiers

An overview will be given of recent DWDM transmission experiments using SOAs as the in-line amplifiers. Line capacities up to 320 Gb/s have been demonstrated with BER < 10−11. The effects of signal-to-noise ratio and inter-channel crosstalk will be discussed.
