Diversity within Diversity: A Comparison and Emerging Issues of Special Education Prevalence between the U. S. and Korea

2009
AbstractThis is a pilot study of a multifaceted project to examine current condition of children with mild disabilities and to identify the related issues and possible solutions. The purpose of this stage is to compare and contrast the definition of each category of disabilities from Korea and the United States to identify the differences in prevalence. Using the statistical data and interviews of teachers and parents with children with mild disabilities, issues from each stakeholder were determined and possible solutions were presented. Parent advocacy group, parent education, parent-teacher disability awareness training, and staff development program for preservice teachers and current teachers were suggested as possible options.
