Solving the problem of excessive voltage rises caused by rooftop solar using voltage-regulating distribution transformers (VRDT): a regulatory and technical evaluation

The paper has analysed grid code requirements, regulatory framework settings and DNSP responsibilities for distribution network augmentation in Germany and Australia driven by the growing grid integration of dispersed generation based on renewables. VRDT technology has proven in Germany to be an adequate technical solution for helping to solve voltage disturbances in LV and MV-networks. As over-voltages are getting more and more common in Australia as PV penetrations exceed 30% in most regions in Australia, local DNSP have also started trialing VRDT technology.
