Art Outside the Metropolis: Regional Galleries in the Nineteenth Century

In Australia, the regional gallery movement was from its beginnings heavily dependent on government patronage and extremely vulnerable to fluctuations in the economy. In this article I trace this economic theme through four of the earliest regional galleries established in Australia, focusing in particular on how they got their buildings.
