In India, brinjal regnant is one of the most common, popular and principal vegetable crops grown throughout the country except higher altitudes. It is a versatile crop adapted to different agro-climatic regions and can be grown throughout the year. It is a perennial but grown commercially as an annual crop.Anumber of cultivars are grown in India, consumer preference being dependent upon fruit color, size and shape. According to the FAO (March 2012) and Indian Horticulture Database 2011, globally te area under eggplant was 1728271 ha, and the total production of 43173989 metric tones. Asia has the largest eggplant production which comprises more than 90% of the world production area and 87% of the world production. According to the FAO (March 2012) brinjal occupied 680000 m ha area in India with the production of 11896000 metric tones.
