A methodology to assess the impact of hidden failures in protection schemes

2004
Protection systems play an important role in the sequence of events of wide area disturbances. The impact or consequences of the unwanted disconnection of power system elements caused by hidden failures in the power system is considered in this paper by an index of severity, intended to help in prioritizing the areas of the system for which mechanisms should be developed to protect against hidden failures. A hidden failure monitoring and control systems HFMCS, would be capable of preventing the contingency caused by hidden failure that would increase the security of the power system. The approach includes system protection, planning and operation and can be effectively applied for the evaluation of electric transmission system.
