W3 Concepts, questions, and change: a simulated response to a critical CQC report

2017
Background ‘The 2016 CQC report has rated our hospital as ‘inadequate’. The Education Department, which includes the ?simulation centre, has been asked to come up with some targeted solutions for specific clinical areas.’ The aim of this workshop is for participants to explore the ways in which clinical educators can utilise their resources (e.g., simulation) to participate in their hospital9s?quality assurance processes, understand audit data and successfully intervene in clinical areas to improve quality of care. Learning Objectives and Session Description 1. To analyse and interpret authentic hospital audit data to identify priorities for intervention 2. To outline a variety of interventions and resources required to address the issues raised 3. To articulate a theory of change explaining why interventions described might work 4. To describe what success might look like The workshop is designed as an interactive session with small groups of 4-6 participants engaging in table-top exercises. Each group will be given audit and CQC data relating to a clinical area and asked to consider a series of 5 questions addressing the design and implementation of a quality improvement project: 1. How would you start to address the problems in this area? 2. What sort of interventions would you consider? 3. What would be your theory of change? 4. What resources -- economic, human or material -- would you need? 5. What would success look like and how would you measure it? Groups will be asked to formulate their ideas onto a poster and present these to the rest of the group for further discussion around theories of change and the role of simulation teams in quality improvement. Target Audience and Maximum Number of Participants The target audience is any individual interested in education and quality improvement in healthcare. The session involves participants divided into 4 groups of 4-6 people with a maximum number of participants of 24 people.
