Histopathology of Intracerebral Hemorrhage

2017
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a subtype of stroke that has considerable morbidity and mortality. Currently there is no proven definitive therapy to assure functional neurological improvement following an ICH. Basic science bench-side testing in animal ICH models has led to improved understanding of the sequence of events at a cellular level in such an event. This article gives an overview of the current understanding of mechanisms of ICH-induced brain injury and novel therapeutic measures being studied aimed at potential translation to the human population to achieve the goal of improved functional outcome from ICH.
