Bronze Age building techniques at Flag Fen, Peterborough, England

1990
Abstract The waterlogged Late Bronze Age wooden platform at Flag Fen, Peterborough, has yielded a number of well‐preserved structural timbers. Some are undoubtedly re‐used or collapsed, but others are thought to be in situ. This paper offers some tentative suggestions as to how the structural timbers may have appeared above ground. Generally, standards of carpentry are high, showing excellent control of various splitting techniques and a clear appreciation of suitable straight‐grained and slow‐grown source materials. The joints used were simple, but effective.
