A dynamic approach for device characteristics based on string matching technique

2014
Over the past few years the amount of available multimedia content in the Internet has increased significantly. The advancement of communication technologies make these contents accessible from any mobile devices. However, most of the times the content is not befitting due to some limitations of mobile device such as limited screen size, small storage capacity, unsupported file format and lower processing power. In order to adapt the content, the server needs to recognize the characteristics of the device. At present, there are several standards and mechanisms that have been proposed for recognizing the device characteristics such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) header mechanisms, Composite Capabilities/Preferences Profile (CC/PP), User Agent Profile (UAProf) and Wireless Universal Resource File (WURFL). However, invalid profiles, not widely supported and out-of-date information are some of the limitations posed by these standards and mechanisms. Therefore, this paper proposes a dynamic method called DRaCaDe for identifying and detecting a device based on string matching technique. Several algorithms have been developed based on DRaCaDe and numerous experiments have been conducted in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The result concludes that DRaCaDe has performed well in terms of the ability to accurately recognize the device characteristics with low processing time.
